Roundel flag of Turkey.svg

The logo of the champion team is displayed on the front of the jersey for the following season.

The season begins in the month of August and ends in the month of May, with a period of rest between the months of December and January.

All 18 participating clubs must complete 34 dates. The last three classified in the table are relegated by category and are replaced by the best three in the second division.

The winning team qualifies for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and the runner-up also participates in that tournament, on the condition that they start from the third preliminary round. Third and fourth place qualify for the UEFA European League.

In addition, the champion of the First Division will wear in the following season a symbol in the middle of the chest.

Our Story

Galatasaray-Fenerbahce 1913-14

Match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe in the 1913-14 season. Until the appearance of the Liga Nacional in 1959, there were only regional leagues.

The arrival of football in Turkey dates back to the end of the XNUMXth century when the English lived temporarily in Thessaloniki (at that time belonging to the former Ottoman Empire).

The first competition on record was the Istanbul League, in the 1904-05 season, with Imogene FC being the first champion. The competition underwent severe changes until the creation of the Milli Lig.

Between the creation of the Istanbul football league and the Milli Lig, there were other leagues of a citizen nature: Eskişehir (1920), Adana (1923), Ankara (1923), Izmir (1923), Trabzon (1923) and Kayseri (1936). ). At the same time, the Milli Küme was played between 1936 and 1950, a competition between clubs from Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, which was the first step towards the creation of a single national league championship.

GS-FB Super final seramoni

Ceremony of the final of the Super League 2011-12.

In 1956 the Federation Cup was created in order to decide a single national champion and represent Turkey in the nascent European Cup (today the UEFA Champions League). Beşiktaş JK won that title twice. Soon, the cup competition was replaced by the Milli Lig.

The Milli Lig was played in 1959 and in its beginnings it did not have a relegation system, until in the 1963-64 season it changed to the current system, changed the name to 1. Lig and, in addition, the 2 began to be played. .Lig.

The first division has received different names throughout its history: milli lig (Liga Nacional), Turkiye 1. Ligi (Turkish First League) Y 1. Super Lig (First Super League). Between 2005 and 2010 the name of Turkcell Super Lig following a sponsorship agreement between the Turkish Football Federation and the mobile operator Turkcell. Currently the championship is known as Spor Toto Süper Lig.
